OCF “March Madness” Folding Contest
The Prize
Intel Q6600 G0
This contest is being sponsored by our friend and teammate cuda340, also known as Bayna. I’d like to thank him for being so generous and supplying our prize. I was also asked to specify that this is an open box Q6600, just so everything is clear. The winner will be shipped the processor free of charge if they reside in either the Continental US or Canada. If the winner is outside those areas they will be responsible for the shipping charge.
Rules
<- Sign ups: Monday, March 3rd @ 12:00am CST through Saturday, March 15th @ 11:59pm CST.
A thread will be available for sign-ups and be LINK’D HERE. You must have a post in the sign-up thread with your Folding ID by the sign-up deadline to participate.
- Contest duration: Sunday, March 16th @ 12:00am CST through April 12th @ 11:59pm CDT.
Be aware there is a daylight savings time change within the contest period. Also, the contest has been aligned with the Folding week and EOC week so you can better track your progress.
<- What you need to do: Fold WUs for Team 32.
Each WU Folded for Team 32 within the contest period will earn each participant one entry for the prize drawing… think about it like a raffle.
This contest is not about points… it’s about science! You do not need the latest hardware, a large Folding farm, or otherwise to participate in this contest and have a chance at winning. All those things will certainly help increase your chances, but a participant who Folds only one WU within the contest period still has one chance to win the prize. A participant with a single machine can win this contest. OCF members from our SETI and Benchmarking Teams can win this contest, and we openly invite them to participate.
This contest is open to any and all who sign-up and Fold WUs for Team 32 within the contest period. That also includes Folders from other Teams who decide to sign-up and Fold WUs for Team 32, so spread the word.
The bottom line is, to better your chances of winning- Fold more WUs, and thus do more science, for Team 32. Simple.
Admin
The contest calculations and entries will be administered by yours truly. I take this duty seriously and I hope all who participate are confident that the contest will administered fairly. I am honored to be able to serve such a great Team and Forum.
- Minimums & Goals: We need a minimum of 20 participants to run this contest. I’m sure that won’t be a problem. Our goals here are to boost the production of current Team 32 members and, more importantly, recruit new members into our great Team and Project.
- Questions? – Please post in this thread.

FAH SMP Affinity Changer
Have you heard of the FAH SMP Affinity Changer? It’s a little program that monitor the process of the FAH client for each core and will redistribute the FAH process accordingly in order to achieve maximum performance for the SMP F@H client!
Here’s some before and after results from me from the Core2Duo processor running a single WinSMP client:
” Project : 2653
Core : Gromacs SMP
Frames : 100
Credit : 1760
– station1 –
Min. Time / Frame : 13mn 13s – 1917.58 ppd
Avg. Time / Frame : 14mn 32s – 1743.85 ppd
– station5 –
Min. Time / Frame : 13mn 09s – 1927.30 ppd
Avg. Time / Frame : 14mn 34s – 1739.86 ppd
– station7 –
Min. Time / Frame : 14mn 18s – 1772.31 ppd
Avg. Time / Frame : 16mn 10s – 1567.67 ppd
– station4 –
Min. Time / Frame : 12mn 54s – 1964.65 ppd
Avg. Time / Frame : 13mn 40s – 1854.44 ppd
– iMac –
Min. Time / Frame : 16mn 13s – 1562.84 ppd
Avg. Time / Frame : 16mn 19s – 1383.26 ppd “
One thing is, it only works with a C2D processor running a single WinSMP client or for a C2Q processor running 2x WinSMP clients. But if you are running a single WinSMP client on a C2Q, it will not have any performance gain on it!!
You can follow this thread for more information/results too!!

New PS3 Client!
SONY has released an updated client for the PS3 that is supposed to fix the recent PS3 client/server issue.
“Hello,
Starting today a new version of Folding is available. This version is a minor fix to the previous 1.3 version and adds a better tuned algorithm that handles peak performance hours of Folding@home network, by acting differently to certain network errors if those occur.
It is recommended that you update to the new version by quitting the application and restarting it. Your current WU will not be damaged in any way, in-fact Folding will continue from the exact point you have stopped it.
Please also check the official Sony Folding site here: http://www.scei.co.jp/folding/en/update.htmlWe can already see a stabilized network activity for the last 5 days. With the new update we are certain that the network will continue to be stable for good.
At this point I would like to thank people again for being patient and continue to donate to our project while Stanford & Sony was working on the fix.
Thanks,
Noam
Sony Development Team”

F@H planned outage today!
Quote from F@H Blog: “One of our server rooms will be undergoing a planned power outage on December 27, starting in the morning pacific time. We expect the outage to last about 5 hours. We are on minimal staff right now due to the holidays, but we’ll do all we can to keep FAH going. Roughly about 40% of the FAH work servers will be affected during the outage, but the AS, stats, web page, etc will all be up.”
